St Vincents College Ashfield Mural

Story Behind the Artwork

Created for the former De La Salle Ashfield, now St Vincent’s College, this mural celebrates the school’s history and its connection to Wangal Country.

The eel and goanna are significant animals for the Wangal people. The eel reflects their connection to the Eel Dreaming, while the goanna represents another important totem animal.

Six blue shapes honour the De La Salle Brothers who began educating boys from Ashfield Parish in 1916.

Three meeting places represent the school’s original classrooms, the joining of three schools and the different stages of learning.

The colours within the eel and goanna represent the school’s four sporting houses: Bernard, Maurice, Kevin and John.

Together, these elements tell a story of Country, cultural identity, education and the school’s evolving community.
