The Story Behind the Artwork
The Marrickville West Public School mural celebrates Aboriginal culture, connection to Country and the importance of community, learning and belonging.
At the centre of the artwork is an eel, an important Dreaming animal of the local area, representing cultural knowledge and the connection between Aboriginal people and their waterways.
Seven meeting places represent the school’s year groups, from Kindergarten through to Year 6, acknowledging the students and their individual learning journeys.
The Cooks River flows through the artwork, recognising the significance of local waterways and the resources they have provided for Aboriginal communities over generations.
Native plants, including gum trees, wattle and grass trees, represent the natural environment and the importance of caring for Country.
Together, these elements tell a story of cultural identity, connection and shared learning, celebrating the relationship between Marrickville West Public School, its community and the Country on which it stands.
