Gordon West Public School Mural

Story Behind the Artwork

The Gordon West Public School mural celebrates Aboriginal culture, connection to Country and the school’s learning community, incorporating native flora, fauna, waterways and traditional Aboriginal art symbols.

At the centre of the artwork is a meeting place representing Gordon West Public School, a place where students, teachers and families come together to learn, play and build connections.

Seven smaller meeting places represent the year groups from Kindergarten to Year 6, connected by journey pathways that symbolise the students’ learning experiences and growth throughout their primary school years.

The school’s sporting houses are represented through coloured meeting places, celebrating the different groups that make up the school community.

Flowing waterways acknowledge the rivers and creeks of the local area, while native plants, bush foods and animals reflect the natural environment and the cultural knowledge Aboriginal people have maintained for generations.

A journey pathway represents the shared experiences of students, staff and families throughout their time at Gordon West Public School.

Together, these elements tell a story of Country, culture, community and education, celebrating the connections that bring the school community together.
