Story Behind the Artwork
This contemporary Aboriginal mural celebrates the Traditional Custodians of the land on which Epping North Public School stands, connecting the school community with Aboriginal culture, storytelling and Country.
The kangaroo, emu and eagle represent the school’s three sporting houses: Bunda, Warramoo and Dirrawon. The eel and snapper are important totem animals for the local area, with the colours within the eel also reflecting the school’s sporting houses.
Traditional tools and weapons, including spears, hunting boomerangs and shields, represent the men and boys, while coolamons and clapsticks represent the women and girls within the school community.
Seven red U-shaped symbols represent the year groups from Kindergarten to Year 6, connected by a journey pathway symbolising the educational journey students undertake throughout their time at Epping North Public School.
Native plants, including banksia, gum and wattle, acknowledge the importance of Country and the traditional use of plants for food, medicine, tools and resources.
Together, these elements tell a story of cultural identity, community, connection to Country and the shared journey of learning and growing together.
